Israeli Martyrs was painted by Pitre to honor the eleven (11) Israeli athletes killed by terrorists during the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. In the background, the image of a magnificent athlete holds the symbolic golden rings symbolizing the Olympic Games. The martyred athletes in the foreground watch the lead runner carrying the traditional torch from ancient Greece, signaling the beginning of the events. The torch is unlit, for this time there will be no Games for them. Each runner passes a column representing one of the Olympiads of those ill-fated Games.
