Explorers
Inspired by his time living in Telluride, nestled deep within a Rocky Mountain valley, John Pitre’s Explorers was born from real encounters with the sublime and unforgiving beauty of the high alpine wilderness. On mountaineering skis, he ventured as far as he dared into the nearly inaccessible interior—into places that felt magical, alien, and untouched by time.
One late evening, the setting sun cast a rich golden glow across the blue-green frozen landscape, creating an extraordinary contrast of color and a dazzling display of crystalline light. Awestruck by the beauty and silence of that moment, Pitre transformed the experience into Explorers.
The painting represents humanity’s enduring spirit of adventure—our instinct to push beyond the known and step into uncertainty. It reflects the willingness to face harsh and dangerous environments in search of discovery, purpose, profit, and enlightenment, reminding us that exploration is not only about geography, but about the courage to pursue what lies beyond the horizon.
