Passion
John Pitre’s Passion explores the tension between religion, society, and human desire. Created during a time when strict moral codes sought to suppress sensual freedom—especially for women—the painting challenges the idea that desire can simply be controlled or denied.
In the work, monks pull the stone figures apart piece by piece, attempting to dismantle passion itself. But you cannot tear down a structure from the bottom without risking collapse on yourself. Pitre’s message is clear: when natural human desire is repressed too forcefully, the system enforcing that repression eventually begins to crumble from within.
Passion is both a celebration of sensuality and a warning of the consequences of denying human nature.
